Sleep Without Fear

(A poem by Gina Praino)
When I was forsaken
Broken and alone
Without hope or means
You came near without a sound
I didn't perceive You
My eyes were blind
My heart seared with pain
And yet I could sleep without fear
The days blending into each other
Feeling more like the night
It would be so easy to die
You came near without a sound
I didn't perceive You
The waves were taking me out to sea
But You preserved my life
And I could sleep without fear
Weeks became months
Months became years
And then the unexpected happened
Night became like day -- An awakening!
Though I didn't perceive You
I could now look back and see You there.
You were with me when I was forsaken
You were with me when I was blind
You were with me through searing grief
You were with me in the waves
You were with me all night
All along the evidence was right there
I could sleep without fear
Through it all
Tonight, in Your arms
I will be aware
And sleep without fear
